Big Resilient By Design Design Opportunities San Francisco 12 A F A S I A A year long collaborative design challenge bringing together local residents, public officials and local, national and international experts to develop innovative community based solutions that will strengthen our region’s resilience to sea level rise, severe storms, flooding and earthquakes. Resilient by design has released the final design concepts for the bay area challenge to promote resilience and improve the urban challenges along the bay area.

Big Resilient By Design Design Opportunities San Francisco 9 A F A S I A The ten multidisciplinary design teams have been actively integrating their experiences to develop innovative design ideas to address sea level rise and climate resilience and are now ready to present creative, innovative, big picture approaches as a springboard for the next phase. Areas with easy access to deep water channels and ferry access can become nodes of density for resilient, floating villages – creating space for up to 75,000 units of housing, and a new lifestyle for the south bay!. For the resilient by design: bay area challenge, one architecture & urbanism (one) partnered with bjarke ingels group (big) and sherwood design engineers (sherwood) to develop a resilience plan for islais creek, an historic watershed in southeast san francisco. In this challenge, ten teams of architects, engineers, designers, and other experts will work alongside community members and local government to identify critical areas along the san francisco bayfront, and propose exciting new solutions that will strengthen our region’s resilience to sea level rise, severe storms, flooding and earthquakes.

Modeled on a successful version of a similar project in new york, this challenge brings together local residents, public officials and local, national and international experts to develop 10 innovative community based solutions that will strengthen the bay area’s resilience to sea level rise, severe storms, flooding and earthquakes. The san francisco bay area is at the forefront of this nascent adaptation effort with the resilient by design bay area challenge, which in may 2017 selected nine high powered teams from across the globe to come up with innovative design ideas that address sea level rise and resilience to climate change around the region. For the competition, design teams led by bjarke ingels group (big), james corner field operations (jcfo), tom leader studio (tls) and others pursue efforts to restore regional wetlands and riparian floodplains while reorienting infrastructural investments and development to suit these new landscapes. In the design phase, which is just kicking off, the home team will be refining plans and designs for north richmond in contra costa county, across the bay from san francisco and north of berkeley and oakland.
