China's Global Media Influence Campaign Growing, Says Freedom House - TUẦN VIỆT NAM Disruptive communication technologies are helping reshape global dynamics by empowering marginalised populations and prioritising public opinion over traditional military hard power. China’s sophisticated and systematic strategy to embed itself in the global news landscape and build its discourse power beyond borders is one of the key findings of a new report launched today by the international federation of journalists (ifj). Set in motion under the leadership of president hu jintao, china's global media expansion, part of a larger ‘going out’ policy for the economy in general, sought to improve the country's image overseas, and to give beijing a larger say in global information flows (thussu et al., 2018). Journalists, scholars, and civil society groups in all 30 countries responded to influence campaigns in ways that increased transparency, ensured diverse coverage, and enhanced local expertise on china. At home, beijing, moscow, and others have used twenty first century tools and tactics to reinvigorate censorship and manipulate the media and other independent institutions. Funding and development of the nation’s media industry also played a critical role in order to strengthen china’s global presence as it prepared to take the olympic stage. the industry’s development has continued since the 2008 games, and is likely to continue gaining prominence as the world watches and awaits the next beijing games.
