Suilc formed in 2015 to develop social innovation strategy for the urban indigenous population in surrey. the city of surrey is a member of surrey urban indigenous leadership committee (suilc) and partners to support suilc's vision and mission. Research and community engagement has shown that indigenous youth in the city of surrey face barriers at greater rates than non indigenous youth in surrey. suilc has conducted research on exemplary programs that are working for indigenous youth in other parts of canada and internationally. The ambassadors program is a wholistic approach to indigenous leadership development, rooted in cultural values, community engagement, and social change. it aims to provide opportunities for ambassadors to enact empowerment, connection, and advocacy within surrey’s urban indigenous community.
