Orkid's 25 year old history at seaworld is filled with tragedy. the independent whale data site ceta base.com records orkid's birth as 1988 in san diego. she is a hybrid whale, the product of female kandu v, an icelandic orca, and orky ii, a northern resident. Orkid’s mother, kandu v, was an icelandic orca; her father, orky ii, was a northern resident. in the ocean, these two types of orcas would not mate with one another, as they have different social structures and speak different dialects, so orkid is considered a “hybrid” orca. We’re transferred from tank to tank for unnatural breeding (male orca is masturbated by trainers), and often times interbreeding. orkid is a tragic example of interbreeding. we are so anxious and depressed, so we cannot control ourselves from aggression. within the history of orca captivty, 4 trainers died and many injured.

Kandu, orkid´s mom, attacked corky one day, which led to kandu´s death. some say that corky was trying to take orkid away from kandu, but nobody knows for sure. another orca started performing with orkid named splash. splash had epilepsy, also known as seizure disorder. working as a team, splash and orkid attacked a trainer named tamarie. On 13 november 2011, ikaika was transported to seaworld san diego, where he joined six other orcas; ulises, corky ii, orkid, kasatka, nakai and kalia. as of december 2021, ikaika is seaworld san diego's largest orca as well as the largest orca in the us weighing in at 9,900 pounds and 21.9 ft long. he spends most of his time with corky ii or. Orkid and nakai at seaworld san diego, april 2019. but orkid is still the smartest! (seen during orca encounter on 5 22 18) orkid and corky ii at seaworld san diego, may 22nd 2018. She knew she was going to die.” at this point, another trainer, robin sheets, made the "brilliant decision" to take the chain of the gate of a pool holding another orca named kasatka. hargrove explained that that would give the two orcas the message that kasatka was approaching, and she was “more dominant than orkid so orkid let her go”.
