Daily Painting | Alameda Stucco - Emily Weil Art Spent better part of weekend slopping drippy wet paint around, using my kitchen counter as an artboard; i have new paint spatters decorating my laptop. had to make myself turn off tv news and put on headphones (blues channel, amazon prime station) so i didn’t grind my teeth as i painted. "when i prep a large canvas for a painting with acrylics — or when i tack a blank sheet of arches watercolor paper up — i welcome the nervous excitement of expressing myself with paint, charcoal, pastels, india ink, or maybe a mix of red dirt from the berkeley hills.

I have been painting away — red rock state park near sedona, cute, spiky barrel cacti, glorious crimson rocky peaks. for all my slopping cadmium reds around in my watercolor sketchbooks, i’ve produced nothing i want to post. ah, well. such is art. having a getaway was the best, though.

Tooling around alameda on my bike going to the market i saw this house on the corner. it was a kind of faded brown but i wanted to make it all about color. 7″ x 10″ watercolor, pen on paper = $90. The art business has pretty much kicked my butt, and i’m stepping back from the grind of trying to be seen and to sell my work. it’s disheartening, the disrespect i’ve encountered in the last few years from galleries and other professional art entities. Before our meeting, i arrived early at franklin park in alameda and started this painting of one of the lovely homes bordering the park (this went better than teaching architectural angles of roof lines). Old cement silos in barnhill marina parking lot in alameda. this area was used for building and launching ships during wwii. these are sturdy. dignified, moody and were once used to hold cement. they kind of loom over the parking lot but i am very fond of them. 7″ x 10″ watercolor, pen on paper = $90.
