We define human–autonomy teaming and offer a synthesis of the existing empirical research on the topic. specifically, we identify the research environments, dependent variables, themes representing the key findings, and critical future research directions.

Different Configurations Of Human-autonomy Teaming | Download Scientific Diagram Enabled through the rapid progression of artificial intelligence, a human autonomy team (hat) involves one or more autonomous computerized agents collaborating with humans on interdependent tasks toward the achievement of a common goal. In this review, we do a deep dive into human–autonomy teams (hats) by explaining the differences between automation and autonomy and by reviewing the domain of human–human teaming to make inferences for hats. Working agreements allow the task structure to remain the same while the involvement of human operators decreases due to improvements in the automation and increases in trust. The introduction of autonomy in transportation and manufacturing systems, as well as the definition of its relationships with the human operator, have given rise to different taxonomies of human machine symbiosis.
