Difficulty Installing Timing Chain Guide Without Losing Timing Marks | Page 2 | Toyota Nation Forum My helper wanted to rotate the crankshaft slightly away from it's timing mark to give enough slack to the chain to install the guide bolts, but i thought instead we should rotate both cams slightly clockwise for the slack. As long as it hasn't damaged the cover, i have come up with a way to replace just that guide and the chain without pulling the cover. i set the crank at it's mark, zip tie the chain to the cam sprocket, and pull it off to the side.

Chain tensioner/guide failures were common with the ls engines. i haven't heard of the same issue on the lt engines, although the tensioner is very similar between the two. for the ls motors, most folks went with the older style ls2 "bowtie", it's a guide not a tensioner. When installing a timing chain, align the timing marks on the sprockets with paint marks of the chain. order : crankshaft sprocket > timing chain guide > intake cvvt sprocket > exhaust cvvt sprocket.
