This striking image, taken with the fors2 instrument on the very large telescope, shows a beautiful yet peculiar pair of galaxies, ngc 4438 and ngc 4435, nicknamed the eyes.

NGC 4435 And 4438 - "The Eyes" Galaxies In Virgo - Sketching - Cloudy Nights Here is a crop of a larger image taken of the eyes. the galaxies ngc 4435 and ngc 4438 are approximately 52 mly's away in the constellation virgo and are members of the string of galaxies called markarian's chain. This observation suggests both a tidal interaction with ngc 4435 and the effects of ram pressure stripping as ngc 4438 moves at high speed through virgo's intracluster medium, increased by the encounter between both galaxies. In photographs, the lower of the two, ngc 4438, shows large graceful blue extensions in several directions. these are strands of millions of stars that were undoubtedly pulled from the main core of the galaxy by gravitational interactions with either ngc 4435 or other large galaxies in this group. : the eyes galaxies (ngc 4435 ngc 4438, also known as arp 120) are a pair of galaxies about 52 million light years away in the constellation virgo. the pair are members of the string of gala.

According to this theory, the effects seen in ngc 4438 were caused when the two galaxies came within about 16,000 light years of each other about 100 million years ago. but while the larger galaxy was damaged, the smaller one was significantly more affected by the collision. Eyes galaxies: a glimpse into ngc 4435 & ngc 4438 by wayofliving. Seen in the center of this image, ngc 4438 and ngc 4435 are a pair of interacting galaxies in virgo with the popular name of the eyes. they are located 100,000 light years apart in space now, but a close encounter in the past has distorted their shapes due to gravitational interactions in the pass. Ngc 4438 shows a highly distorted disk along with long tidal tails as a result of the gravitational interactions with other galaxies and its companion. the distortions evident in ngc 4438 may be attributed to an off center collision with ngc 4435.
