This research seeks to contribute to the knowledge about the importance of mentoring programs as a fundamental tool to promote interest in stem areas. this research provides valuable insights from women in managerial, teaching, research, and external professional roles in stem. Women are underrepresented in stem fields, comprising only 28% of female phd students globally and 24% of the global stem workforce. the presence of female role models and mentors universally is essential for overcoming these biases and promoting gender equality.

To celebrate a decade of women and girls in science day, i’m sharing my thoughts and experiences on how mentorship can help shape a better future for women and girls in science. your first mentor creates a first impression. people say the first experience of doing something creates lasting memories. this is very true for science. In this article, we describe the origin and design of the program and discuss why this type of professional development is needed to advance and retain women in stem professions. finally, we highlight initial outcomes of the program. There are 6 actionable strategies illustrated that may be added to a multidimensional mentoring model in order to better support women in medicine. both mentorship and sponsorship contribute to the success of physicians and scientists in academic medicine.
