Zion UMC The design challenges for mt. zion united methodist church were to create enough space for the growing congregation, and room for an education facility, all within a modest site. two major considerations were made when designing this building. Jenkins’s design combines a traditionally vertical, gabled church form with modernist simplicity and bold forms.

Zion UMC These two issues were resolved via two phases of construction. the phase i addition addressed the churches' immediate need for space. a portico covered drop off led into a narthex addition that was completed at grade. more space was also created in the sanctuary via a new balcony. Two lots located at 1533 and 1535 dewey avenue; were both purchased and the new church was built, at the current location. mt. zion was destroyed by fire on october 27, 1955 and reconstruction was completed in february 1957.
