The city of kampen, which boasts one of the best preserved old city centres in the netherlands, dates back to the 12th century. its position close to the mouth of the ijssel river (which flowed into the zuider zee) gave it sheltered anchorage and as such, it became a trading centre. Its economy revived with the development of industry in the 19th century and the opening of the nearby agricultural polders (land reclaimed from the ijsselmeer) in 1942 and 1957. kampen is now a service centre. its industries include food processing, printing and publications, and cement manufacture.
