Mold – Under Microscope One of the top ways to determine if mold is present on a property is to look under a microscope. the appearance of the mold will differ heavily based on the type of mold that is present. more so, mold that is grown in a laboratory tends to have a different appearance than mold grown out on its own. Also referred to as mould, mold is a type of fungi that is genetically similar to yeast. like yeast, molds are also eukaryotic and can be found in moist places. they are also decomposers and use enzymes to breakdown dead organic materials (leaves, wood, plants etc) which are sources of energy.

Mold – Under Microscope I observe the fruiting bodies and sporangia (and spores) of a mold under the microscope.🖂 newsletter http://www.microbehunter.com/newsletter signup/🎈 bec. Mold is a fungus that grows in the form of multi cellular filaments called hyphae. the best way to examine mold under a microscope is to grow your own in a controlled environment. soft bread without preservatives in it is perfect for this experiment. Think of a plant and what happens with a seed, only with mold, the seed is known as a spore and the roots and branches are “hyphae.” the fruit is made by the fruiting body. the whole plant is known as the mycelium. a spore lands on a nutrient source, typically cellulose, and sends down hyphae. the hyphae are the stomach of the mold. If you observe a probable fungus in the culture plate, colony characteristics are first assessed to determine the broad group of the isolate. once the initial observations are made, the following microscopic criteria are used to make a genus/species identification of the fungal isolate. if hyphae are observed, determine the structure of the hyphae.
