Introduction To Pacific Ocean Litter Project Polp Polp is working to decrease marine plastic litter within the coastal environments of pacific island countries by reducing the availability of single use plastics. The project aims to reduce the volume of single use plastics (sups) that pollute the marine environment in the pacific. the polp will run for 7 years, where sprep implements in collaboration with 14 pacific islands countries including the cook islands.

Pacific Ocean Litter Project Conservation Management Website Marine litter is a pressing environmental, health and economic development problem for pacific island countries. plastic pollution in particular, threatens the livelihoods of pacific island communities that are dependent on coastal systems for food, trade and tourism. Our cleaning technologies are deployed around the world as we conduct the largest cleanup in history. for over ten years, the ocean cleanup has been researching, extracting, and monitoring plastic pollution in oceans and rivers globally – with tens of millions of kilograms removed to date. The project will focus on reduce and refuse approaches to waste management, rather than recycle or return approaches. other projects in the pacific region are already looking at how to support recycling and return of existing plastic and other waste. The pacific ocean litter project (polp) is about reducing the volume of single use plastics ending as marine litter in pacific coastal environments, the 6 year project (2019 2026) is funded with aud 16 million from the australian government and implemented by the secretariat of the pacific regional environment programme (sprep) in collaboration.

The project aims to support pacific island countries to reduce and remove single use plastics from household litter, including food & beverage take away containers, plastic bags, pet bottles and plastic straws. The workshop will also outline the intended approach for the delivery of key national and regional level activities under the project that will promote the ongoing, effective coordination of aligned efforts to address the issue of marine litter within the pacific. The area of increased plastic particles is located within the north pacific gyre, one of the five major ocean gyres. the patch was predicted in a 1988 paper published by the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa).
