Engawa Architects Our practice is busy and demands good performance from all of our small team to deliver the service we aim for. whilst we are all focussed and disciplined in our work, we still get to enjoy the unique and diverse opportunities the job brings, be it travel, fishing, cultural tours or just hanging out in amazing places with amazing people. Instead of adding massive sliding glass doors (a common western move), we introduced an engawa inspired design. it became this in between space—sheltered enough for cool weather but open enough to enjoy the view. the result? a home that felt grounded, intentional, and at one with its surroundings.

In this article, you’ll learn how the engawa serves as a bridge between traditional japanese homes and modern sustainable design. we’ll explore its practical benefits, the cultural significance tied to zen principles, and how modern interpretations are influencing architecture globally. As architects, we constantly strive to create spaces that not only stand beautifully on the land but also respect it. our latest project, a net zero engawa inspired house, embodies that balance. Architecture projects featuring engawas, including contemporary houses with narrow external verandas or terraces based on the traditional japanese feature.
