A public facing institution on the rice university campus, the mission of the moody center for the arts is to encourage creative thinking and original expression, enrich curricular innovation, and promote cross campus and community collaboration through transformative encounters with the arts.

The permanent acquisition of artworks, the rice public art collection, reaches across the entire rice campus and has been praised in art & object as one of the "most rigorous world class permanent collections of public art in the country.". Rice public art presents and commissions public artworks, exhibitions, and programs that are accessible to all and which underscore the caliber and spirit of scholarly inquiry at rice university. The rice public art collection, anchored by james turrell twilight epiphany skyspace, currently features more than sixty works by international and local artists, including recent site specific commissions by odili donald odita, shirazeh housihary and natasha bowdoin, among others. The moody center for the arts facilitates the acquisition, installation, maintenance, and awareness of the rice public art collection. with campus partners, the moody also identifies opportunities to engage the rice and houston communities through these amazing artworks. Public works by hometown luminaries and internationally celebrated artists dot our grounds and fill our buildings. past the campus hedges, houston sustains a thriving arts community.
