SPINAL CORD INJURY AWARENESS DAY 2022 - Horatio's Garden On sci day 2025, as chair of the iscos prevention committee, i am pleased to address this year's slogan, "fall prevention, spinal cord protection." we come together under this important theme to raise awareness and take action against one of the leading causes of spinal cord injuries worldwide. Sci involves damage to any part of the spinal cord. it causes damage to nerve fibers to the area around the injury, which can cause a disruption of signals to areas of the body, resulting in paralysis. the most common causes of sci are motor vehicle accidents, sports accidents, falls, victims of violence, and physical labor. In recognition of september’s spinal cord injury awareness month, we’re sharing member perspectives on how united spinal’s programs have impacted their lives. SPINAL CORD INJURY AWARENESS DAY 2022 - Horatio's Garden In recognition of september’s spinal cord injury awareness month, we’re sharing member perspectives on how united spinal’s programs have impacted their lives. Now here i was, at the beginning of a global pandemic having sustained a life changing spinal cord injury. i didn't see that one coming. despite having urgent surgery i was still left with. According to the national spinal cord injury statistical center, approximately 17,000 new spinal cord injuries occur in the u.s. each year. these injuries can result from various causes, including accidents, falls, and medical conditions. Spinal cord injury awareness month is a time of reflection, education, and advocacy, aimed at raising public awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries, promoting prevention efforts, and highlighting advancements in medical technology and support systems. We lead this annual event to raise awareness of spinal cord injury and highlight the challenges spinal cord injured (sci) people face on a daily basis. this year’s theme is all about the everyday challenges faced by sci people. By shining a light on dcm, we can push for earlier diagnoses and more effective treatment options, ultimately improving the lives of those affected. but the fight against dcm cannot be led by healthcare professionals alone. we all have a role to play in raising awareness and spreading education.
