Living in a community where more people trusted the government appears to have been an asset to children during the pandemic. the average u.s. public school student in grades 3 8 lost the equivalent of a half year of learning in math and a quarter of a year in reading.

Student Growth During The Pandemic - Llama With Class We leverage administrative, survey, and virtual learning data to examine the determinants of family learning mode choice and the effects of virtual education on student engagement and academic achievement. Utilizing longitudinal growth modeling, we compared three year growth trajectories in reading and mathematics to those of pre covid cohorts in the same grades. results show middle school students are keeping pace with historical growth rates in reading and show signs of recovery in mathematics.

This project examines how students’ academic outcomes have been affected differently by the pandemic and offers evidence based recommendations for using federal dollars to support students whose academic progress has been slowed by the pandemic. The pandemic and remote learning have seriously disrupted those important connections, resulting in huge numbers of students losing the motivation to even show up for virtual classes, let alone participate.
