Attachment theory, initially developed by john bowlby, has evolved to incorporate neurobiological findings and to illuminate the impact of early relational trauma on development. Without the support of a caregiver, children experiencing trauma can struggle regulating their emotions, can experience large amounts of stress, and have decreased ability to communicate their needs. Repeatedly traumatized children and adolescents share overlapping symptoms of ptsd; however, experiences of prolonged trauma during sensitive periods of development are more detrimental to children, given their age, limited cognitive capacities, and dependency on caregivers. Trauma related responses are patterns or repetitive routines that play themselves out in the relationships and environments that children and young people are engaged in.
