In the wretchedverse, you'll get to take on the role of anti heroes in a variety of settings, from dark fantasy to post apocalyptic fiction and everything in between. this is the revised version of the old school rules that have been used in prior releases by the red room. That should give you a nice set of npcs and good backstory to work with. the tricky part is getting the pcs into the plot; when in doubt, use force and violence, because it's not something the pcs can simply walk away from. A few days ago, i ran a 5e d&d one shot which was a murder mystery, with a "film noir" theme, as per the request of a player. it was fun and all, but d&d wasn't the best system for it; magically detecting thoughts can make interrogation a bit redundant.
